What is SCA and how can it be treated?
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is caused by a sudden abnormal rhythm of the heart, called ventricular fibrillation. This abnormal heartbeat can be corrected with an electric shock, or defibrillation.
- In an SCA incident, the victim collapses and stops breathing. Death can occur unless CPR and defibrillation are performed within minutes to restore the heart's normal rhythm.
- Lives can be saved if trained responders provide prompt CPR and defibrillation, such as with an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Why Do You Need an AED Program in theWorkplace?
- SCA accounts for 13% of on-the-job fatalities.
- OSHA provides information on the importance of readily available AEDs and encourages installation of the devices in workplaces.
- Signed into federal law in 2000, the Cardiac Arrest Survival Act (CASA) provides limited immunity from civil liability for those who acquire or use an AED if the state has not otherwise granted immunity for such persons under other statutes.
- If you already have an AED program at your workplace, now is the time to upgrade your units to be in compliance with the new 2005 CPR Guidelines.
