HEAT AND SUN SAFETY

During the summer season, it’s important to provide employees with the correct protection from extreme heat conditions and harmful UV rays.

Hydration plays an important role in staying alert, whether working outdoors at a construction site or in a hot indoor facility. Exerting energy without replenishing body fluids can be dangerous. The CDC recommends that a worker should drink five to seven ounces of liquid for every 15 to 20 minutes of activity. Also, the body’s electrolytes, or minerals, should be replaced as they are lost with perspiration, either with electrolyte replacement tablets or electrolyte-replacing beverages.

Working outdoors also puts workers at risk of harmful UV radiation that can cause premature aging of the skin and skin cancer. OSHA recommends the following to prevent excessive exposure to the damaging rays of sunlight:
• Wear tightly-woven clothing that blocks out light.
• Use sunscreen of at least SPF15 that protects against UVA and UVB rays.
• Wear a wide-brimmed hat that protects the face, ears, neck, and scalp.
• Try to minimize the time spent outside between 10:00am and 4:00pm.

Sqwincher Beverages

Stop heat stress before it starts. Within seconds of drinking Sqwincher, electrolytes are replaced and energy is restored. Choose from liquid or powder concentrates, either in individual single servings or various gallon-size packages to accommodate large crews. A variety of great-tasting flavors will help ensure workers are drinking regularly to combat the effects of dehydration and heat stress.

Miracool Bandana

Soak this reusable bandana in water for 30 minutes, and the unique polymer crystals will keep the fabric cool for up to two full days. Simply tie the bandana around the neck while working outdoors to help keep body temperatures regulated and minimize the risk of heat stroke.

INSECT PROTECTION

Whether workers are outdoors for a few hours or all day, taking some easy steps to prevent insect bites can help protect their health and safety. Mosquitoes and ticks can carry diseases such as West Nile virus, malaria, and Lyme disease. Other insects, such as bees and wasps, have potentially harmful stingers that could cause an allergic reaction in some individuals.

Using insect repellents is an effective way to avoid being stung or bitten by insects. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends using insect repellents containing the ingredient DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin. The duration of protection varies based on the length of outdoor activity, as well as the strength of the formula used. ZEE provides a wide selection of insect repellent formulas and applications to meet a variety of individual needs.

SKIN IRRITANTS

Plant-related skin irritants can seem harmless, but symptoms can be distracting and uncomfortable and impede overall productivity. When working outdoors, coming into contact with poison ivy, poison oak, and sumac can be a common occurrence. Typically, symptoms of contact with the allergens in these types of plants include rashes or hives that may appear red, swollen, and blistered followed by severe itching. Rashes from poisonous plants can last from 5 to 12 days, and in severe cases, up to 30 days. When employers and safety managers are concerned about worker safety, choose from ZEE’s selection of topical barrier and cleansing treatments to help prevent poisonous plant-related skin conditions while keeping employees safe on the job.

Before your employees venture outdoors, equip them with Ivy-X Pre-contact Towelettes.
