Approximately 295,000 EMS-treated out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur annually in the United States. This amounts to just over 80 incidences each day.
During a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) event, a victim’s irregular heartbeat cannot be corrected without the use of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and an automated external defibrillator (AED).
A victim’s chances of survival are reduced 7 to 10 percent with every minute that passes without CPR and defibrillation.
Anyone can suffer a sudden cardiac arrest. Many victims appear healthy with no known heart disease or other risk factors.
